SFL-151m Freezer Review
Have you ever been forced
into panic warming? This is when you warm your perishable foodstuff like meat
because of a power outage.
You can smell the meat about
to go bad and the freezer that was supposed to protect the meat has lost it’s
coldness.
In fact a pool of bloody meat water has formed at the bottom.
In fact a pool of bloody meat water has formed at the bottom.
Panic warming is saddening
because
1. It takes time to package
foodstuff in a freezer—so all that work gets ruined.
2. It disrupts careful
planning—you will now have to use up stuff you were planning to store over a
period of time.
With over 30 years in the freezer manufacturing business, they sure know how to protect your storage plans.
And when it freezes,
you’ll think winter happened in your freezer.
It’s like an ice block machine the way it protects your food items in thick layers of glacial frost.
It’s like an ice block machine the way it protects your food items in thick layers of glacial frost.
To make sure you get the
best out of it, try and limit the amount of times you open the freezer.
A good practice is to
label your foodstuff so that you can know exactly where you’ve placed them in
the freezer.
You don’t want to be that
person who spends up to ten minutes digging through frozen items in search for
that bowl of soup or something.
Another good practice is
to be sure you don’t try to store foodstuff like meat for over six weeks.
This will help you avoid
the dreaded freezer burn. In fact once perishable items spend up to six weeks
in the freezer, they lose nutrients and become denatured.
So bear this in mind.
Another thing I noticed is
that it cools from the bottom up. Unlike some freezers that seem to only freeze
at the top.
This also means that it
freezes faster so less energy (electricity) is required to preserve your stuff.
Now of course this fast freeze function works better with newer units.
After using the freezer for over a year or more, it may not freeze as quickly anymore.
This is because the compressor may become worn out.
A good practice is to change the compressor at this point.
To be clear, it may gradually lose the ability to freeze quickly after a year or more but it would still freeze well and keep your foodstuff preserved for days.
Another way to ensure that it freezes fast, is to make sure you set the freezer to the right settings.
And make sure it's not too jam-packed with items. If items are placed too closely together, it would take longer to freeze said items.
So ensure that there's a little space between items. Items like meat freeze faster when cut to thinner slices.
Also if the freezer is almost empty or contains few items, it would take longer to freeze.
Lastly, to make your food items freeze as fast as possible, get the freezer to be as cold as possible before placing items in it.
And speaking of gens, it
will work well on a 3kva generator.
Now sometimes the outer
body gives off heat which could be scary. But this heat dissipates after a
while.
In fact a little heat is
normal. It shows that your compressor is working hard to cool your foodstuff or
chill your drinks—(the ones in plastic bottles.
You don’t store glass in the freezer, you know that right?)
You don’t store glass in the freezer, you know that right?)
The heat should only
bother you when it persists for several hours and when it becomes hot enough to
singe your skin.
That becomes a symptom of
either dirty coils or dusty grills.
Performing a little
maintenance exercise could help.
You could clean the
grills, the door lids (to prevent air from leaking through the doors and
getting into the freezer compartment).
No Sudden Electric Shocks
The Scanfrost SFL-151M freezer is also well
insulated so you won’t get those occasional shocks when touching the body or
the edges.
That’s good right, unless you’re a battery that requires a little jolt from time to time.
That’s good right, unless you’re a battery that requires a little jolt from time to time.
So we know it will
preserve your foodstuff the way you want but is it the right size for you?
Size/ Volume
Size is a very crucial
factor when buying a new freezer. You have to be sure it will fit into the
space you have for it.
This is a small sized Scanfrost freezer. Just about 145l although most vendors claim it’s 166l (a forgivable
error in calculation).
The length is just about 3
ft and it is about 2 ft wide and it’s almost 3 ft tall.
If you still can’t picture
it, just know that a mop stick is around 3 ft long.
So this Scanfrost freezer can fit in your dining or hallway or kitchen if you have enough space in the kitchen.
So this Scanfrost freezer can fit in your dining or hallway or kitchen if you have enough space in the kitchen.
It is perfect for singles
and great for small families. Families with 2 or 3 kids and two parents.
If you have such a family,
you can store a week's worth of food with this freezer.
It is also a good spare freezer. Assuming you already
have a 250- 300l freezer or larger and you just want a backup.
It is the perfect way to
preserve your groceries especially if you’re the type that doesn’t have time to
cook.
Just pick out something
from the freezer, warm it and you’re good to go.
Just make sure you keep
your freezer well stocked.
When a freezer is full of foodstuff, it requires less energy to freeze because cold air is transferred from one item to another.

So it will retain coldness
for longer and won’t use up too much electricity.

Great Space Management
To help you better manage
the available space, it comes with a white removable basket.
This is where you can keep stuff you’ll like to reach quickly like ice cream or the occasional cans of milk.

Also try and wrap foodstuff like meat in resealable cellophane bags.

This will better preserve
the meat and ensure that it retains it’s taste.
And if you’ve got kids who
like to sneak up to the freezer to get ice cream, this freezer has a lock.
Or if you live in a hostel
and you want to protect that loaf of bread from your roomies, this freezer will
help you.
So you’re the boss. No one
can get to your foodstuff without your say so.
Pros
Works on low voltage
On a final note , I love
the fact that this freezer can function on low voltage.
That’s a life saver
especially if you live in an area where the power supply is erratic or
unreliable.
This is due to the
brilliant in-built stabilizer that is common to Scanfrost freezers.
Easy to move
It is also easy to move
around because it is light and has caster wheels. It is just about 20kg so it wouldn’t be too cumbersome
to move.
That’s great if you want
to relocate.
Great Warranty Package
Because errors can sometimes occur or if you somehow get a defective unit, the freezer comes with a nice warranty package.
That is a nice 2 year
warranty and a mouth-watering extra 1 year warranty for the compressor.
The manufacturers are
clearly confident in the quality of this freezer.
And unlike some brands
which have terrible customer service, Scanfrost has great customer relations
and 33 service centers in Nigeria.
So wherever you stay in
Nigeria, there is a chance that there is a service center available in your state.

Anti-Rust
Some freezers don’t age
well. Their body coating peels off to reveal ugly rusting. Yikes.
But the body of this SFL-151M freezer is made by a genius mixture of steel and 10% chromium.
That’s not all, other metals including nickel and titanium are blended with the mixture.
This metals are bonded together at an extremely high temperature to produce something so durable and pure called Inox.

The result; you get a
freezer so strong that it is resistant to rust from scratches, time, and even
corrosion by some acids.
Cons
You have to defrost this
freezer occasionally to combat frost buildup. This is common to all freezers.
So there’s no escaping it.
