Polystar Double Door Fridge PV-DD202LR Could Be Great But

Polystar as a brand has gained popularity in Nigeria because it is an indigenous brand, their products are cheap and we Naija people have a soft spot for cheap stuff.

And to be fair, they have some good quality products.
Be that as it may, this fridge has some selling points which include:

  • It uses pure copper coil for the evaporator. This is a true sign of quality and most freezer/ fridge experts believe that appliances that have copper coils instead of aluminum tend to last longer.

  • It’s true in a way. Although I’ve seen fridges with aluminum coils that last for several years too.

  • But the fact that this fridge has pure copper coils and is still more affordable than an LG fridge is a great selling point.

  • It cools very fast and the  freezer compartment freezes fast too. Put stuff in this fridge and it would get chilled within an hour.

  • It has a strong body that does not dent easily. You can imagine how annoying it would be if you saw dents on your fridge not long after you purchased it.

  • Luckily this freezer has a solid exterior.

  • It is tropicalized. This means it can handle the intense Nigerian weather.

  • You won’t find it dripping water or sweating while working. And it keeps foodstuff cool even during very hot weather.

  • It reduces your power consumption by 70% because of it’s energy saving feature.

  • It is pleasant to the eyes. I’m not saying the design is sleek or mind blowing. It has a simple rectangular frame with a silver finish that can blend in with your furniture.

  • Some units come with a red coating which is also nice.

So the fast cooling is a big plus for this fridge. I also like the fact that the freezer compartment is placed at the top.

This is my personal preference. I just feel that it makes getting stuff out of the freezer part much quicker since I don’t have to bend down.

This means I don’t have to leave the  fridge doors open for too long and this also helps with saving energy.

Although I must add that it defrosts really fast once there is no power supply. This fridge was clearly not designed to cope with the unreliable power supply in Nigeria.

Update:
I wrote this review a while ago and as usual my job is to keep you updated. So the manufacturer has attended to the flaws I mentioned before. The fridge now retains cooling for days after loss of power (about 2 days).

It is very similar to the Nexus 100L chest freezer in this aspect.

So if you’re going to use it, make sure you live in areas with constant power supply like in Abuja and some parts of Lagos or use a generator.

Power Rating

This unit also boasts of a 70% energy saving feature. I tested it with a watt meter and noticed that it consumes about 85w.

That’s not too bad for a fridge. In fact anything below 100w is quite okay.

So it can work well on a 3.5 kva gen. And like any modern fridge, it has an inbuilt stabilizer so it works well on low voltage.

With a good quality evaporator and good wiring system, this fridge does not shock you when you touch it.

The body does not overheat or sweat. And it is not a noisy unit. You know some fridges roar or make jerky sounds like their compressor is having  convulsions.

But this fridge has a smooth sound even when you have used it for over a year.

Size/ Volume

It is about 3ft long and 2.5ft wide. So it is not so big. It’s a table top fridge sized at 80L.

The 80l does not seem as big because it is divided into a fridge and small freezer compartment.

The fridge compartment takes up most of the space while the freezer is placed at the top.

If it was a chest freezer, it would be easier to appreciate the 80l liters because it would be one big freezer space and not divided into compartments.

Anyway this fridge is quite short and is suitable for small families with one or two kids. It is great for singles.

Or you can use it as a spare cooling unit if you already have a larger freezer.

It has the usual removable trays you will find in any fridge. And the door compartments are big enough to carry 2l bottles.

So this fridge will fit in your kitchen or dining or bedroom. It won’t take up much space because of it’s small size and the fact that it doesn’t need a stabilizer.

Portability

It’s a small fridge and weighs 8kg. So it is very light and easy to move. It also has caster wheels to aid movement.

The wheels also help with stability. So you don’t need to fashion a wooden stand for this fridge.

Lock/Key

It has a lock too to protect the integrity of your food items. Depending on your preferences, this may be a welcome feature.

I like the fact that I can lock my fridge. Since opening it too frequently doesn’t help and by locking it I can control the number of times it gets opened especially by others.

Warranty/ After Service Contact

This fridge comes with a one year warranty. This is okay considering the cheap price.

If you buy a defective unit, you can always return it depending on the return policy of the store you purchased it from.

But to make use of the 1 year warranty, this is the contact number for Polystar Electronics.

0818 396 4535--- Abuja

+234 (0) 803 304 9901--- head quarters.

So you can contact them to find out if there is a Polystar office in your state or how you can redeem your warranty.

Verdict

This Polystar PV-DD203l or 202l (no difference) has all the makings of a great fridge.

But the fact that it doesn’t retain coldness when there is no power supply is discouraging.

So it is a good fridge. And I can finally recommend this fridge.
