Now most portable generator manufacturers would rather use DC overvoltage testing instead of AC over voltage testing because it is easier and, in some cases, cheaper.
DC testing is cheaper because it is not as rigorous as AC testing. When DC testing is used, it does not notice the tiniest defects. It does not take the atmospheric and temperature conditions at the time of testing into consideration.
But AC over voltage testing would actually destroy the whole copper winding insulation if there is a tiny fault.
Manufacturers avoid this method of testing because it creates losses for them in terms of production time and quantity of equipment used.
First, they would lose all the copper used for insulation on that particular generator unit and secondly, they would have to repeat the whole manufacturing process again.
But Lutian manufacturers are more interested in the quality of their generator units. The generators are made with the highest level of quality in mind even if it means restarting the whole process from scratch when there is a fault.
Apart from current leakage testing, the units also undergo extreme load testing and endurance testing with the same stringent methods that ensure that if there is one slight error, the whole process is restarted from scratch.
This great care and attention to detail does not stop here.
While other brands outsource their engines. For instance, most portable generator manufacturers just couple Honda Engines with their own fuel starter, outlet and alternator. This saves production costs during the manufacturing process and to be fair, Honda Engines are quite okay.
But Lutian generators on the other hand come with patented Lutian engines.
The smaller Lutian generator models for example are equipped with the LS196/LS208 engines that are built with the same precision they use for manufacturing their alternators.

These smaller engines usually produce a maximum of 7.0 HP which is suitable for most light load requirements. So, if you are thinking of getting one of the small gensets from 3.5 kva and below, this is the engine you would get.
These engines are designed to last. They are rigorously tested in similar fashion to the alternators. And the parts (forged with superior grade iron and aluminum) are fitted so snugly with precise robotic welding to ensure that the vibrations are reduced to the lowest possible level.
But superior build quality is not all that Lutian generator engines have to offer. The engines are also equipped with standard exhaust mufflers that further balance the sound pressure from the generator's operation.
The result is generator sets that operate at surprisingly low noise levels. This low noise operation would delight you if you live in a multi-apartment complex or you hate the sound of noisy generator sets.
The lubrication system present in Lutian generators is also top notch to prevent over heating. When a generator overheats, it would shut down and leave the owner wondering what went wrong. Lutian is a Chinese manufacturing brand. They have been in the business since 2002 and since 2016 the brand has gradually gained acceptance in Nigeria.
This is because of their generator quality and the fact that there is no fake version in the market yet.
Some readers once complained that they are skeptical about Chinese products. If you are one of the skeptics then bear in mind that most products you use today are made in China.
The Iphones you use are made in China. Most high-end TV sets including LG are made in China. In fact the whole world especially the USA is saturated with Chinese products.

Having said that, let us look at the 1.2 kva Lutian LT1800N generator.
This is a small Lutian generator. It is not meant for much load.
What Can a 1.2 Kva Generator Carry?
A 1.2kva gen produces about 900w. So it won’t carry very much.
Below is an example of what it would carry.
One 5 star energy-rated freezer (60 – 90w) with initial starting power of 320w.
3 electric bulbs (60w x 3) = 180 w
One energy-saving TV (75- 120w)
One box fan (200w)
Total wattage of appliances =
320 + 180 + 120+ 200 = 820w
So all these appliances I have listed have almost used up the generator's full 900w capacity. Especially if you use them at the same time.
This Lutian generator cannot carry a pressing iron even if you remove all the load.
It would not carry a water pump. In fact, it would not carry any freezer above 100 w.
It is meant for low-duty use.
Now that you know what it will carry, let us see it’s design.
Lutian 1.2 Kva Generator Design
It has a weather/ sound cover that also acts as a fuel tank. I noticed that this cover does not fully cover areas like the choke, air filter, and rope starter.
No big deal since you’re most likely to place the gen in a sheltered place.
This cover rests on an open rectangular frame with rounded edges to reduce vibration.
This orange-coated frame forms the whole skeleton with two horizontal metal bases attached at the bottom.
The single-cylinder OHV engine rests on this bases.
Like all overhead valve engines, the engine is compact and air-cooled.
It is also a four-stroke petrol engine and very reliable.
Then on the front side of the frame, we have the receptacle panel where you will find the voltmeter, circuit breaker, ignition key, and power outlets.
The oil receptacle is just below this panel and placed so awkwardly that you will need to tilt the gen to refill the oil. Or you could use a funnel.
The design is alright and I like the orange and black color theme.
Performance
So the OHV engine makes this generator easy to start because of the low-end torque.
You shouldn’t experience a situation where the starter rope will cut.
The starter rope itself is durable and lasts for at least two years.
It would be nice if this Lutian generator came with a battery but sadly it does not.
I like how the power output remains steady and does not fluctuate like some other small generators (tiger generators, I’m looking at you).
It shows that the capacitors are of good quality with enough electrolytes.
And the fuel consumption rate is so economical. It uses just 0.5 l per hour. So the full tank (15l) lasts up to 30 hrs.
That’s a lot of run time and is the reason why small generators like this are always a blessing.
This generator performs quite well and the 100% copper coil makes it reliable.
No issue of burnt coil. If you don’t overload this generator, it would serve you well.
Portability
This Lutian LT1800N generator has no handles or pneumatic tires for easy movement but it is light.
It weighs 12kg and should be easy to move around.
Durability
Because the original version is still very common, it lasts for a minimum of 5 years.
In fact, if you service it periodically and use good oil, it should go on for 1-2 years at a time without developing faults.
Price
The price of this Lutian generator usually ranges between 50 – 55,000 Naira.

What Can A 3.5 Kva Generator Carry?
A 3.5Kva generator generates about 2625 watts- 2800 watts depending on the engine’s efficiency.
This engine generates 2700 watts.
So let me give you an example of what it would carry at the same time.
4 60w Electric bulbs = 240w
1 box fan = 200w
1 fridge with starting power = 600w
1 freezer with starting power 800w
1 42” TV = 200w
Total wattage of appliances = 2040 watts.
So it would carry all these at the same time and still have at least 560w to spare.
If you want to use heavy load appliances on it then switch off your other appliances first.
It would carry heavy appliances like:
Pressing Iron- 1200w
Washing Machine- 2250w
Microwave- 1000w
Laser printer- 1200w
Just make sure that before you use any of these heavy appliances, you must have switched off other sources of load.
Its not advisable to use your pressing iron and washing machine at the same time.
Design
The design is very similar to the 1.2kva gen I just described.
The color theme is still orange and black.
But this time the weather cover spans the full length of the frame and shelters the choke and air filter.
The panel on the front as usual houses the voltmeter, ignition keyhole, 2 DC power outlets, and the various indicator lights.
The same 4 stroke, single-cylinder, OHV engine is used in this model and it rests just below the fuel tank on two metal bases.
This Lutian generator model comes with a battery for convenient ignition.
But there’s no obvious base for the battery to rest on.
Performance/ Noise Level
This generator is very easy to start.
It’s even got a battery. So you can switch it on by turning the key.
But even if you have to use the rope, it won’t take you more than one or two tries at most to turn it on.
The current delivery is stable enough and the AVR is great and delivers that steady 220v. So using sensitive appliances like your laptop on it shouldn’t be a problem.
I love the low sound too. It’s much better than the 1.2 kva version.
It is lower than the sound of a vacuum cleaner. Very smooth. Just about 67db.
The fuel performance as expected is higher than the 1.2 kva model.
It uses 1 liter per hour under heavy load.
When the load is light it drops to roughly 0.8 liters per hour.
So the total run time is about 15 – 18 hrs depending on the load.
Just know that the fuel tank is 15 l.
Portability
This generator does not come with adjustable handles but it has black rubber grips on the frame that make lifting it a bit easier.
It is heavy and weighs 46 kg. I can lift it alone but I’m pretty strong. Lol.
So you might need some help to move it.
It doesn’t come with tires too. I wonder why a portable gen doesn’t have tires.
Durability
Most Lutian generators tend to last. And this gen is no exception.
Since the fake version is not yet out, you’re most likely to get the version with full copper.
So the coil won’t burn. The oil lasts too. You only have to refill once a month.
When the generator is still new some people don’t bother to check the oil level for up to two months.
That’s not a good habit though.
The good thing is that this gen will automatically shut down if the oil level is too low so that the engine does not knock.
But before it gets to that stage, the indicator light would warn you if the oil level gets too low.
Lutian 3.5 Kva Generator Price
The price of this gen normally ranges from 80 to 95k. (2019 era)
This generator is 3.2kva although most online sites label it as 3.5 kva.
It is similar to the Lutian LT3600 generator model.
What Can A 3.2 Kva Generator Carry?
A 3.2 kva generator generates about 2250 – 2400 watts, depending on the efficiency of the engine.
This Lutian generator produces 2305 watts. This is an estimate of what it would carry.
Box fan 20” = 200w
Tv (5 star energy rating) = 80w
Laptop = 200w
4 60w bulbs = 240w
Freezer with starting power = 360w
Fridge with starting power = 360w
Total wattage of appliances = 1360w
It will power all these at the same time and you’ll still have 960w extra.
Note that the power rating for your appliances may differ from what I’ve listed.
But this generator can carry heavy appliances too.
You just have to switch off other equipment first.
These heavy appliances include:
Pressing Iron = 1000- 1200w
Microwave oven = 1000w
Hairdryer = 1250w
Curling Iron = 1000w
Printer with starting power= 1200w.
So it would carry heavy equipment like these as long as you switch off other stuff like your fridge and freezers.
Lutian 3.2 Kva Generator Design
Like I said it is very similar to the LT3600E model.
Same orange rectangular frame with the fuel tank at the top.
The difference is that this model has a plain tank without the fancy etchings seen on the LT3600E tank.
The same reliable OHV air-cooled engine is used and it rests under the fuel tank.
The ignition system is different and this time instead of a key, this model has a black switch for ignition.
Also, the power outlets don’t come with protective covers like the other model.
Basically, this model's minimalist design makes it appealing.
Like the saying goes, simplicity is the best sophistication.
Performance/ Noise Level
This Lutian LT3600B-8 model does not come with a battery for ignition but it is very easy to start too.
The starter rope is also of good quality and not too thin or brittle.
The same quality AVR is used in this gen so it’s no surprise that the voltage supplied is a steady 220v.
But it’s not just the steady voltage that’s cool. The sound is good too. This generator operates quietly and won’t disturb the neighbors.
It is 67db and has a smooth sound without annoying undulation.
But what about the fuel consumption? Well, this generator sips 1 liter per hour.
And on the lower load, it uses 0.8 liters every hour.
When the 15l tank is full it will run non-stop for a max of 15- 18 hrs depending on the load before the fuel runs out.
It also does not use up too much oil.
Once the oil is well gauged, you could use it for up to a month without refilling.
I like to check the oil every three weeks. It’s a good practice.
This generator performs very well and continues the impressive run of the Lutian generator brand.
Portability
This generator weighs 40kg and is a bit heavy.
It does not come with adjustable handles but it has rubber grips on the frame to make moving it easier.
Lutian 3.2 Kva Generator Price
The price of this model usually ranges from 88,000 to 97,000 (2020 era)
Durability
It is a good quality generator and lasts long.
It also rarely develops faults as long as you service it regularly and do not overload it.
This Lutian generator is 3.8 kva and produces about 2850 watts.
So below is an estimate of the appliances it would carry
Box fan 20” = 200w
Tv (5 star energy rating) = 80w
Laptop = 200w
4 60w bulbs = 240w
Freezer with starting power = 360w
Fridge with starting power = 360w
Microwave oven = 1000w
Total wattage of appliances = 2360w
It will power all these at the same time and you’ll still have 490w to spare.
This generator can also power other heavy appliances separately i.e without adding any other load.
It will carry;
1 washing machine with starting power = 2250w
13,500 btu air conditioner with starting power = 2300w
P.S
Just make sure you know the starting watts for your air conditioner before using it on this gen.
If it’s above 2500w then this generator would not carry it.
Or you can switch on the AC first before switching on other appliances.
This will give the gen enough chance to power the AC before carrying other equipment.
But doing this is risky because the air conditioner could trip off suddenly and have to start again.
And then the gen would not be able to power it while powering all your other appliances.
An alternative would be to use an inverter air conditioner. Inverter models require less starting power and would work well on this generator.
Lutian 3.8 Kva Generator Design
The fuel tank is very similar to the LT3600E tank with fancy etchings.
Although this model follows the traditional Lutian generator build with the orange frame and black every other thing;
It comes with adjustable handles and nice pneumatic tires.
This 3.8 kva generator also comes with a battery for easy ignition.
As usual, the base for the battery to rest on is not obvious.
But as I found in this really helpful Lutian 3.8 Kva gen review, you should cut off the black stud beneath the alternator in order to properly fit in the battery.
The black stud was created to protect the alternator during shipping.
The display is similar to other models. It’s got the voltmeter, 2 DC power outlets with weather covers, circuit breaker and indicator lights.
Refilling the oil is awkward like most portable generators.
You will have to tilt the gen or use a funnel.
Lutian 3.8kva Generator Performance/ Noise Level
This model is also easy to start. It's got an ignition key that you can turn.
And voila your generator will come on.
The battery is good. It lasts for 18 months minimum before you recharge.
The AVR and capacitor are of good quality so the voltage is steady (220v).
It also has a great oil alert system that shuts down the generator when the oil is too low.
This saves the generator engine from knocking.
And the oil consumption is economical too.
You can refill it once a month. When it’s new, it can go on for two months at a time without refilling the oil.
But you should check the oil level every 3 weeks to be on the safe side.
Now, the noise is louder than the LT3600E model.
It’s got a smooth sound but it’s not that quiet.
And the fuel consumption is a bit high.
It uses 1.2 liters of fuel per hour.
On light load, it uses 1 liter per hour.
So if you fill the 15-liter tank then you will get 12.5 – 15 hours non-stop run time.
So the performance is ok. And the fuel consumption is normal for a generator of this capacity.
Portability
This unit is 50 kg so you won’t be able to lift it alone unless you’re a Sumo wrestler.
Fortunately, it comes with adjustable handles and tires.
So it is portable enough.

The price for this gen ranges from 80 – 88,000 Naira. (2020 era)
Durability
Unless you get a defective unit, this generator rarely develops faults until after 2 years.
Just make sure you treat it well by servicing it every 6 months.
What can A 6.5 Kva Generator Carry
This generator produces 4875w.
That’s a lot of watts.
It will carry at the same time
1 fridge = 360w
1 freezer = 360w
1.5 hp AC with additional starting power = 3351w
5 bulbs = 300w
LED TV= 75 W
Total watts used = 4446w
So even with all this load, this generator will still have 429 w to spare.
Remember that this is an estimate and the power rating for your appliances may differ.
This Lutian generator will easily power a water pump even while carrying your freezer and fridge.
With this gen, you can use your pressing iron without switching off other appliances.
But don’t try to use the pressing iron and your 1.5 hp AC at the same time.
Because doing so might overload the gen.
Just calculate the power rating of your equipment before using the gen.
Lutian 6.5 Kva Generator Design
The whole generator set rests in an open black metal frame.
Following traditional portable generator design, the fuel tank is placed over the engine and everything else.
As usual you can find the indicator lights, voltmeter, circuit breaker, power outlets and ignition slot on the display panel.
What’s notable about the design is the adjustable handles and tires.
The build is very solid. You can tell from the body alone that its of good quality.
This Lutian 6.5 kva gen also comes with a battery.
Lutian 6.5 Kva LT6500 EB Performance/ Noise Level
It is easy to start especially for a generator of its capacity.
It’s so easy to start that it comes with remote control.
You can use this remote control to turn it on or off. And the remote works through walls.
So even if you’re in your sitting room, the generator would still respond.
The range for the remote is up to 50 m.
Sweet right?
Apart from the starting features, it also operates with low noise like the LT3600E model.
But as expected the fuel consumption is on the high side.
It consumes 1.8 liters of petrol per hour.
So when the 25-liter tank is full, this gen will run for almost 14 hrs.
The bigger the gen, the higher the fuel consumption.
It also uses oil a bit faster than the smaller Lutian generators.
You will need to gauge the oil every two weeks or less.
But even if you forget, the gen will shut down automatically if the oil gets too low.
On the other hand, the voltage supplied will never get too low.
It is steady at 220 v and the coil is 100 % copper.
The capacitor is also great so there is no fluctuation especially when you switch on light bulbs.
The overall performance is good.
Portability
I have already pointed out that it comes with adjustable handles and tires.
So it’s easy to move. Although because of the way it is built and it's heavyweight (85kg), it is easier to pull it back than to push it forward.
So you can’t push it like a wheelbarrow. You could but you’ll probably grow extra muscles from the effort.
Price
This generator usually ranges from 170,000 to 195,000 Naira.
Durability
Since it’s 100% copper, you’ll never worry about burnt coil.
But the capacitor may give out after 2 years.
So you’ll need to get that replaced.
Another problem this generator normally develops is a faulty carburetor.
Usually in the third year, just get ready to buy a new carburetor.
Don’t fall for the usual technician talk of servicing or washing the carburetor.
Buy a new one and it should work smoothly.
Carburetors are cheap. The most expensive would be around 1000 naira.
Having said that, try and service the gen every four months (3 times a year) to prolong the lifespan.
This is a very powerful generator.
What Can this generator Carry?
This Lutian generator produces 6975 watts.
That’s a lot of juice.
It will carry the following appliances at the same time.

Central AC 2hp with additional starting power = 4200w
1 fridge 360 w
Freezer = 360 w
Tv = 100w
Box fan = 200 w
Total watts used by appliances = 6220 w
Even when you load it with all this, the gen will still have 700 watts to spare.
This Lutian LT10990E generator can carry your borehole pump without stress.
You can use a power drill on it.
And most times you don’t have to switch off other appliances because you want to use a piece of heavy equipment.
It can easily carry two 1.5 hp air conditioners at the same time.
Lutian 9.3 Kva LT10990E Design
This generator has a design similar to the Lutian LT3990E model.
It’s like a cart with a generator inside.
The frame is red in color and ends with an adjustable handle at the top.
Unlike the other models that have separate handles, this version has joint handles to complete that cart-like look.
It also comes with tires and a black funnel.
The display is placed at the front.
On it, you will find the indicator lights, circuit breaker, ignition switch, timer, voltmeter and power outlets.
Lutian 9.3 Kva Generator Performance/ Noise Level
Starting this gen is easy. The recoil system is very responsive.
It also has an electric start feature.
So instead of using a key to turn it on, you flip the switch.
And then it’s got remote control too.
As if the easy starting was not enough.
The sound is a bit on the high side but quite okay for a generator of this capacity.
Just know that it will definitely disturb the neighbors.
It’s not a gen you can put on your veranda. The noise will get on your nerves.
It’s better to place it in a shed.
The fuel consumption is high too but not abnormal for a big gen like this.
The total run time is 11.5 hrs when you fill the 28.5 l tank.
So it consumes about 2.5 liters of fuel per hour.
But the voltage supplied is steady.
With a good AVR and 100% copper coil alternator you won’t notice flickering lights even while using heavy appliances.
The oil consumption is also higher than other models.
You will need to top the oil every week.

Anyway, I find the sheer power of this generator impressive.
Portability
With its cart build and solid tires, moving this gen is easy.
But you will need help to lift it up unless you are on steroids.

Durability
This generator is solid and does not emit too much carbon.
The coil is pure copper and lasts for years.
Before it develops faults like a bad carburetor or dead capacitor, you should have used it for at least 3 years.
As usual regular servicing will prolong the lifespan of the portable generator.
